Crispy Orange Tofu Stir-Fry
This crispy orange tofu is the kind of dish that converts even the most skeptical tofu doubters. Golden cubes of extra-firm tofu get a shatteringly crisp coating from a light cornstarch dusting, then are tossed in a sticky-sweet orange sauce that clings to every crunchy edge. It's takeout-quality food made entirely at home.
What sets this version apart is the fresh orange zest and juice working together with rice vinegar and a touch of chili flakes. The sauce reduces into a glossy glaze that's the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and just barely spicy. Bright snap peas and red bell pepper add color and crunch to every bite.
Serve it over steamed jasmine rice or fluffy brown rice to soak up all that gorgeous sauce. A sprinkle of sesame seeds and sliced scallions on top make it look as good as it tastes. Ready in under 30 minutes. Faster than delivery.
Ingredients
- ● 14 oz extra-firm tofu
- ● 3 tbsp cornstarch
- ● 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- ● 1/2 cup orange juice
- ● 1 tbsp orange zest
- ● 3 tbsp soy sauce
- ● 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- ● 2 tbsp brown sugar
- ● 3 cloves garlic
- ● 1 tsp fresh ginger
- ● 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- ● 1 cup snap peas
- ● 1 red bell pepper
- ● 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- ● 2 scallions
Instructions
- 1Press tofu for 10 minutes between paper towels with a heavy object. Cut into 3/4-inch cubes and toss with cornstarch until evenly coated.
- 2Heat vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add tofu in a single layer and cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes until golden on the bottom. Flip and cook another 3-4 minutes until crispy on all sides. Remove to a plate.
- 3In a small bowl, whisk together orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar. Set aside.
- 4In the same skillet, add garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- 5Add snap peas and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2 minutes until crisp-tender.
- 6Pour in the orange sauce and bring to a simmer. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
- 7Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss gently to coat everything in the sauce. Serve immediately over rice, topped with sesame seeds and scallions.
